Laboratory of the Sociology of Law. University of Zaragoza

The Laboratory of Sociology of the Law (Laboratorio de Sociología Jurídica) of the Zaragoza University emerged as a result of the research labour developed by some members of the Area of Philosophy of Law. Manuel Calvo García, Andrés García Inda, Mª José González Ordovás, José Ignacio Lacasta Zabalza and Teresa Picontó Novales were founding members of the Law and Society Network (Red Derecho y Sociedad), which was the genesis of Association for the Analysis about Law and Society (Asociación de Análisis sobre Derecho y Sociedad) during the 90’s.

The Laboratory of Sociology of the Law operates in a framework based on trans-disciplinarity and, going beyond the most common research agenda in Law studies, it has promoted different streams of empirical research about the Law elaboration and application, the effective functioning of legal institutions and the design and implementation of public and social policies. During its first decade, main projects and PhD theses of this research group were oriented to the field of social policies (children and teenagers rights, basic and social incomes, young offenders, gender and family policies, right to work, implementation and effectiveness of social rights…). These initial projects were complemented with others related with legal configuration of volunteer activities, participatory policies and, during the last decade, with the analysis of public security and criminal policies, mainly related with gender violence.

Specially related with this last stream, the Laboratory has become a clear referent in family and gender violence research field in a national context, where it has collected data and has done research reports and policy papers for the Consejo General del Poder Judicial (2001), for the Observatorio contra la Violencia Doméstica y de Género (2003-2004), the Departamento de Justicia del Gobierno Vasco (2002; 2006-2007), the Instituto Aragonés de la Mujer (2001, 2002 and 2004, 2011, 2012 and 2013) and the Instituto de la Mujer (through a R&D project from 2007 to 2009).

Laboratory members have managed and have collaborated in research contracts and competitive R&D projects for several public institutions. The Laboratory of Sociology of Law has been recognised as Consolidate Research Group by the Government of Aragón in the public calls of 2002; 2005 y 2008, 2011 and 2014. It is important to highlight that the Laboratory was one of the twelve research groups that were part of the project “Human Rights Age”, within the Consolider-Ingenio 2010 program (Proyecto CONSOLIDER CSD2008-068). This project was realized between 2008 and 2014. Nowadays, the Laboratory is developing a research project, within the National Program for the Research, Development and Innovation Oriented to the Social Challenges (DER2014-55400-R) with the project El tratamiento de la violencia de género en la Administración de Justicia. Implementación y eficacia de la LO 1/2004. Manuel Calvo García, Teresa Picontó Novales, Andrés García, Mª José González Ordovás, Mª José Bernuz y Daniel Oliver are members of this current project.
